Mother requested that I have more food posts. So here is a small one. A couple of my staples include Baozi and Roujiamo. My favourite Baozi stand sells the meat variety (pork or beef) for 1 yuan each, and most vegetable-stuffed baozi are just a few mao. So I can get a filling meal for less than a few yuan, 25 to 50 cents US, by buying a few fat and delicious steamed Baozi. The filling juices get trapped inside when baozi are steamed, which of course makes an excellent flavor explosion. I always ask the woman to give me a variety of vegetable baozi to try because I don't know any of the names. Last time, however, I got one that had spinach, onion, and mushroom. I will need to learn the name of that one.
Another favorite that I eat once or twice a week is Roujiamo, which is like a Chinese hamburger. It's a bun/pita filled with green pepper, tender shredded meat, and cilantro, plus whatever other flavors the stand has included. Not all stands have good Roujiamo. Filling can be skimpy with fat chunks and poor quality pita. My favourite place sells them for 3.5 yuan, about 50 cents US. They don't skimp on the green pepper or the meat and the pita seems like real bread. And, again, I didn't take these photos, they're stolen off the internet but are good representations of the aforementioned foods. (update: removed photos, found them mildly unsightly)
When I'm in a hurry and sick of oatmeal, I can get a thing of sushi or a hard-boiled egg at the convenience store in my building. I also snack on a lot of fruits and vegetables, like apples, peapods, and cucumbers. Fruit stands are everywhere. Spicy peanuts are also a good snack. Though they are no joke spicy.
